A Simple Weekly Cleaning Schedule That Works for Our Home

Sarah Johnson January 18, 2025 2.1k

Let me be honest: I've never been a naturally tidy person. When my husband and I first got married, our apartment was a constant mess. We'd let things pile up until the chaos became overwhelming, then spend an entire Saturday cleaning—only to have it fall apart again by Wednesday. Sound familiar? Over the years, as we added two kids to the mix, the cleaning struggle only intensified. I tried countless cleaning schedules I found online, but none of them seemed to work for our family's unique rhythm.

I'd get discouraged when I couldn't keep up with the "perfect" cleaning routines I saw on social media. It felt like everyone else had their act together, while I was constantly playing catch-up. Finally, I realized that the problem wasn't me—it was the schedules I was trying to follow. They were too rigid, too time-consuming, and didn't account for the unpredictable nature of family life. So I decided to create my own schedule—one that fit our actual lifestyle, not some idealized version of it.

Cleaning Routine

"Cleaning isn't about perfection—it's about creating a space that feels calm and manageable for your family." Sarah Johnson

After months of tweaking and adjusting, I finally landed on a schedule that works for us. It's simple, flexible, and doesn't require spending hours cleaning every day. The key insight was realizing that I don't have to do everything myself. My husband and kids now contribute to the cleaning routine, which makes it feel like a team effort rather than a solo burden. This schedule isn't perfect, and there are still days when things get off track—but that's okay. The goal is progress, not perfection.

What I love most about this schedule is that it takes the decision-making out of cleaning. I don't have to waste time figuring out what to clean each day—I just follow the plan. And because the tasks are broken down into manageable chunks, cleaning doesn't feel overwhelming anymore. It's become just another part of our daily routine, like making breakfast or helping with homework.

The best cleaning schedule is the one you can actually stick to—even on your busiest days.

Our Weekly Cleaning Schedule

Here's the simple cleaning schedule that's been working for our family. Remember, this is just what works for us—feel free to adjust it to fit your own lifestyle and needs. The beauty of this system is its flexibility.

Weekly Cleaning Tasks

Monday: Kitchen Focus

The kitchen is the heart of our home, so we start the week by getting it in order. This includes wiping down counters, cleaning the stovetop, taking out the trash, and running the dishwasher. My kids help by putting away their dishes and wiping down their placemats.

Tuesday: Bathrooms

We have two bathrooms in our home, so we tackle one each Tuesday. This includes wiping down sinks, cleaning toilets, and replacing hand towels. My husband takes the master bathroom, while I handle the kids' bathroom.

Wednesday: Floors

Midweek is floor day. We vacuum all the carpets and mop the hardwood floors. My older child loves to help with vacuuming, which makes this task go much faster.

Thursday: Dusting & Tidying

Thursday is for dusting surfaces and tidying up common areas. This includes straightening pillows, organizing bookshelves, and dusting furniture. We try to spend just 15-20 minutes on this task.

Friday: Laundry Catch-Up

By Friday, the laundry is usually piling up, so we spend some time catching up. We sort clothes, start a load, and fold what's already clean. My kids help by putting away their own clothes.

Saturday: Deep Clean (As Needed)

We reserve Saturday for deeper cleaning tasks that don't need to be done every week, like cleaning the oven, washing windows, or organizing closets. If we're busy or have plans, we skip this and pick it up the following week.

Sunday: Rest

Sunday is our day of rest. We don't do any scheduled cleaning on Sundays—instead, we focus on spending time together as a family. If things get messy during our Sunday activities, we just tidy up as we go.

Daily Tasks (10 Minutes Each)

What I love about this schedule is that it's realistic. It doesn't require hours of cleaning every day, and it allows for flexibility when life gets busy. Some weeks we stick to it perfectly, and other weeks we skip a day or two—either way, our home stays relatively clean and manageable.

Another key to making this work is having the right tools. I've found that having a caddy with all our cleaning supplies makes it much easier to get started. We keep it under the kitchen sink, so everything we need is in one place.

Remember, the goal isn't to have a spotless home at all times. It's to create a space that feels calm and welcoming for your family. Some mess is inevitable—especially with kids! The important thing is to find a routine that works for you, not against you.
