Bathroom Organization Hacks That Actually Work for Busy Families
By Sarah Johnson | January 12, 2025 | Cleaning & Organization | 9 Comments
A few years ago, our bathroom was a constant source of frustration. The counter was cluttered with toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, and various toiletries. The shower caddy was overflowing with bottles, and the under-sink cabinet was a chaotic mess of cleaning supplies and hair products. Every morning, we'd scramble to find what we needed, and every night, the mess would somehow get even worse.
As a busy mom of three, I knew I needed a better system. I tried various organization products and techniques, but nothing seemed to stick. The products were either too flimsy, too expensive, or just didn't work for our family's needs. I felt like I was constantly fighting a losing battle against bathroom clutter.
Then one day, I decided to take a step back and think about what would actually work for our busy family. I stopped buying fancy organization products and started looking at what we already had. I considered our daily routines and what was causing the most chaos. After months of trial and error, I finally developed a system that works—and today, I'm sharing those hacks with you.
The Breaking Point
I'll never forget the morning that pushed me to make a change. It was a school day, and we were running late (as usual). My youngest couldn't find her favorite hairbrush, my middle child had squeezed toothpaste all over the counter, and my oldest was complaining that her shampoo bottle was empty.
I found myself on my hands and knees, digging through the under-sink cabinet looking for that hairbrush, when I realized something: this isn't how it should be. Our bathroom should be a functional space, not a source of daily stress.
That's when I decided to take control. I spent the weekend completely overhauling our bathroom organization, and I've been refining the system ever since. Today, our bathroom is a tidy, functional space that works for our entire family—even on the busiest of mornings.
My Bathroom Organization Hacks
1. The Lazy Susan Solution
Rotate the lazy Susan to use the oldest items first.
One of the best investments I made was a simple lazy Susan for our bathroom counter. I use it to hold frequently used items like toothpaste, mouthwash, and hand soap. The lazy Susan allows everyone to easily access what they need without having to move things around, and it keeps the counter looking tidy.
For our under-sink cabinet, I use a larger lazy Susan to hold cleaning supplies and extra toiletries. This has been a game-changer—no more digging through the back of the cabinet to find what we need!
2. Drawer Dividers for Small Items
Use drawer dividers to organize small items.
Our bathroom drawer was once a jumbled mess of hair ties, bobby pins, and other small items. I solved this problem with simple drawer dividers that I found at the dollar store. Now each type of item has its own designated space, and it's easy to find what we need.
I also use drawer dividers in our vanity drawers for makeup and skincare products. This not only keeps everything organized but also helps me see what I have, which prevents me from buying duplicates.
3. Over-the-Door Organizers
Use over-the-door organizers to keep items off the counter.
When space is limited, look up! I installed an over-the-door organizer on the back of our bathroom door to hold items like hairbrushes, hairspray, and other styling tools. This keeps these items off the counter and within easy reach.
For our linen closet, I use a similar over-the-door organizer to hold smaller items like washcloths and travel-sized toiletries. This frees up shelf space for larger items like towels and sheets.
4. Shower Caddy Upgrade
Upgrade to a tension rod shower caddy for more space and stability.
Our old shower caddy was a disaster. It was constantly falling off the shower head, and the bottles would tip over and create a mess. I replaced it with a tension rod shower caddy that spans the width of the shower. This type of caddy is sturdier and provides more space for all of our shower products.
I also started using clear, labeled bottles for our shampoo and conditioner. This not only looks neater but also helps us keep track of when we're running low on products.
5. Under-Sink Storage Bins
Use clear storage bins to categorize items in the under-sink cabinet.
The under-sink cabinet was once the most chaotic space in our bathroom. I solved this by using clear storage bins to categorize items. We have bins for cleaning supplies, extra toiletries, first aid items, and hair products.
I labeled each bin so everyone knows where things belong, and I make sure to do a quick tidy-up every week to keep things organized. This has made a huge difference in reducing morning stress.
6. Daily Reset Routine
Daily reset routine to tidy up the bathroom.
Perhaps the most important hack of all is our daily reset routine. Every night before bed, we spend 5 minutes tidying up the bathroom. We put away any items that are out of place, wipe down the counter, and make sure the shower is free of clutter.
This simple routine ensures that we start each day with a clean, organized bathroom, which sets a positive tone for the rest of the day. It's become such a habit that our kids now do it without being reminded!
The Results
Since implementing these hacks, our bathroom has transformed from a source of stress to a functional, peaceful space. Here are some of the positive changes we've noticed:
- Mornings are less stressful and more efficient
- We spend less time looking for lost items
- The bathroom stays cleaner for longer
- We waste less money on duplicate products
- Everyone in the family knows where things belong
One of my favorite things about these hacks is that they're affordable and accessible. I didn't have to spend a lot of money on fancy organization products—most of what I used was either things we already had or inexpensive items from the dollar store or big-box retailer.
Tips for Getting Started
If you're ready to tackle your bathroom organization, here are some tips to help you get started:
- Start with a clean slate: Before you begin organizing, take everything out of your bathroom and give it a thorough cleaning. This will help you see what you're working with and make it easier to implement your new system.
- Purge what you don't need: As you're taking everything out, sort items into three piles: keep, donate, and throw away. Be ruthless—if you haven't used something in six months, you probably don't need it.
- Consider your routine: Think about how you and your family use the bathroom. What items do you reach for most frequently? Make sure those items are easily accessible.
- Use what you have: Before buying new organization products, look around your home for things you can repurpose. Mason jars, shoe boxes, and even old food containers can make great storage solutions.
- Label everything: Labels are your best friend when it comes to bathroom organization. They help everyone in the family know where things belong and make it easier to maintain the system.
- Start small: Don't try to organize your entire bathroom in one day. Start with one area, like the counter or the under-sink cabinet, and work your way through the space.
My Favorite Bathroom Organization Products
While I believe in using what you have, there are a few products that have made a big difference in our bathroom organization:
- Lazy Susans: Perfect for countertop and under-sink storage
- Drawer dividers: Great for organizing small items like hair accessories and makeup
- Over-the-door organizers: Perfect for maximizing space in small bathrooms
- Tension rod shower caddy: Sturdier than traditional shower caddies and doesn't damage your shower head
- Clear storage bins: Great for under-sink storage and keeping items organized by category
Final Thoughts
Organizing your bathroom doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. With a little creativity and some simple hacks, you can transform your bathroom from a chaotic mess to a functional, peaceful space.
Remember, the key to successful bathroom organization is finding a system that works for your family's needs. What works for us might not work for you, and that's okay. The important thing is to find solutions that make your daily routine easier and reduce stress.
I hope these hacks inspire you to tackle your own bathroom organization. It might take some time and effort, but the results are well worth it. Imagine starting each day with a clean, organized bathroom—no more digging through cabinets or searching for lost items. It's a small change that can make a big difference in your daily life.
Here's to happier, more organized bathrooms!

As someone who shares a bathroom with three other people, I can relate to the chaos! These are some great, practical ideas. I especially like the over-the-door organizer tip—we have limited space, so that would be perfect. Thanks for the inspiration!
