Creative Storage Solutions for Small Homes with Kids
By Sarah Johnson | January 25, 2025 | Cleaning & Organization | 12 Comments
When my husband and I first moved into our small three-bedroom home, we thought it would be perfect for our family of three. But then we had two more kids, and suddenly our cozy home felt like a cramped space filled with toys, clothes, and all the paraphernalia that comes with raising children.
I'd find myself tripping over toys in the hallway, struggling to find space for clean laundry, and wondering how we could possibly fit one more thing in our already overflowing closets. I felt like we were constantly fighting a losing battle against clutter.
But I refused to believe that we had to move to a bigger house to have a functional home. So I started researching storage solutions for small spaces and experimenting with different ideas. After years of trial and error, I've discovered creative storage solutions that have transformed our small home into a functional, organized space that works for our entire family.
The Breaking Point
I'll never forget the day that pushed me to take action. It was a Saturday morning, and I was trying to clean the house while keeping an eye on my three kids. I'd just finished folding a load of laundry when I realized I had nowhere to put it—our dresser drawers were already overflowing, and our closet was packed to the brim.
As I stood there holding a pile of clean clothes, I looked around our living room and saw toys scattered everywhere, books piled up on the coffee table, and shoes strewn across the floor. I felt overwhelmed and defeated. I wondered how we could possibly live like this.
That's when I decided to take control. I spent the weekend researching storage solutions for small spaces and came up with a plan to organize our home. I started with one room at a time, and slowly but surely, I transformed our cramped space into a functional, organized home.
My Creative Storage Solutions
1. Utilize Vertical Space
When you're short on floor space, look up! I've found that utilizing vertical space is one of the most effective ways to maximize storage in a small home:
- Floating shelves: I installed floating shelves in our living room, bedrooms, and kitchen to display books, decorative items, and kitchen essentials without taking up floor space.
- Over-the-door organizers: I use over-the-door organizers in our closets, bathroom, and pantry to store shoes, toiletries, and food items.
- Tall bookcases: I replaced our short bookcases with tall ones that reach the ceiling, doubling our storage space for books and toys.
2. Multi-Functional Furniture
In a small home, every piece of furniture should serve multiple purposes. Here are some of my favorite multi-functional furniture pieces:
- Ottomans with storage: We have several ottomans with hidden storage that we use as coffee tables and extra seating. They're perfect for storing toys, blankets, and games.
- Bed frames with drawers: All of our beds have built-in drawers underneath, which we use to store clothes, bedding, and seasonal items.
- Desks with hutches: My husband's desk has a hutch that provides extra storage for office supplies without taking up additional floor space.
3. Under-Bed Storage
The space under your bed is valuable real estate in a small home. Here's how I utilize it:
- Storage bins: I use clear plastic storage bins under our beds to store out-of-season clothes, shoes, and toys.
- Bed risers: I installed bed risers to create more space under our beds, allowing us to fit larger storage bins.
- Rolling storage: I use rolling storage drawers under our beds for items we need to access more frequently.
4. Closet Organization
Our closets were once the most chaotic spaces in our home. Here's how I transformed them:
- Closet organizers: I installed closet organizers with shelves, drawers, and hanging rods to maximize space.
- Slim hangers: I replaced our bulky plastic hangers with slim velvet hangers, which take up less space and prevent clothes from slipping off.
- Shelf dividers: I use shelf dividers to keep stacks of clothes, towels, and linens neat and organized.
- Door hooks: I added hooks to the inside of our closet doors to hang belts, scarves, and bags.
5. Toy Storage Solutions
Toys are one of the biggest clutter culprits in a home with kids. Here's how I keep them organized:
- Open storage bins: I use open storage bins in our playroom to store toys by category (dolls, cars, blocks, etc.). This makes it easy for the kids to find what they're looking for and put things away.
- Wall-mounted storage: I installed wall-mounted shelves and bins in our playroom to keep toys off the floor.
- Rotating toy system: I rotate our kids' toys every few weeks, keeping some toys in storage and bringing out others. This keeps the kids interested in their toys and reduces clutter.
6. Kitchen Storage
Our kitchen is one of the smallest rooms in our house, but it's also one of the most used. Here's how I maximize storage space:
- Cabinet organizers: I use cabinet organizers to maximize space in our kitchen cabinets. This includes pot racks, spice organizers, and pull-out shelves.
- Magnetic strips: I installed magnetic strips on the inside of our cabinet doors to hang knives and other metal utensils.
- Over-the-sink cutting board: I use an over-the-sink cutting board that creates extra counter space when needed.
The Results
Since implementing these storage solutions, our small home has transformed from a chaotic mess to a functional, organized space. Here are some of the positive changes we've noticed:
- We have more space for the things we need and love
- The kids can easily find and put away their toys
- We spend less time cleaning and more time enjoying our home
- Our home feels more open and inviting
- We no longer feel like we need to move to a bigger house
One of my favorite things about these storage solutions is that they're affordable and accessible. I didn't have to spend a lot of money on custom storage systems—most of what I used was either things we already had or inexpensive items from the dollar store or big-box retailer.
Tips for Getting Started
If you're struggling with storage in your small home, here are some tips to help you get started:
- Start small: Don't try to organize your entire home at once. Start with one room or one closet and work your way through the house.
- Purge first: Before you start organizing, take everything out and sort items into three piles: keep, donate, and throw away. Be ruthless—if you haven't used something in six months, you probably don't need it.
- Think vertically: When you're short on floor space, look up! Utilize walls and ceilings for storage.
- Use multi-functional furniture: Every piece of furniture should serve multiple purposes in a small home.
- Label everything: Labels are your best friend when it comes to storage. They help everyone in the family know where things belong.
- Get creative: Don't be afraid to think outside the box. Look for unused spaces in your home that could be converted into storage.
My Favorite Storage Products
While I believe in using what you have, there are a few storage products that have made a big difference in our home:
- Floating shelves: These are perfect for displaying items without taking up floor space.
- Over-the-door organizers: These are great for storing shoes, toiletries, and other small items.
- Storage bins: Clear plastic storage bins are perfect for storing items under beds and in closets.
- Slim hangers: These take up less space than traditional hangers and prevent clothes from slipping off.
- Ottomans with storage: These are versatile pieces that provide extra seating and storage.
Final Thoughts
Living in a small home with kids doesn't have to be a struggle. With a little creativity and some clever storage solutions, you can transform your small space into a functional, organized home that works for your entire family.
Remember, the key to successful storage in a small home is to maximize every inch of space and to be intentional about what you bring into your home. Before buying something new, ask yourself if you really need it and where you'll put it.
I hope these storage solutions inspire you to take control of your small space. It might take some time and effort, but the results are well worth it. Imagine walking into a home where everything has a place, where you don't have to tripping over clutter, and where you can actually enjoy your space.
Here's to happy, organized small homes!
